I actually asked myself this last night: "Had we capitalized on our FT opportunities, would Hess have called MORE fouls against us?" Conspiracy theory, I know.
Damnit, if we're gunna be conspiracy theorists, let's do it right!
Hess's Fouls Per Game against the "Big Four":

Seasons as Biggest Hess Offender:
WAKE - 6
DUKE - 4
NCSU - 2 (not including this year)
UNC - 1
^ That can be a very misleading stat/graph, unless you adjust for tempo. As we play a FAR slower pace than any of the other "Big Four" schools, you'd need to adjust the absolute numbers for possessions per game... get a "fouls per possession" stat... to be very meaningful.
Tempo-free, fellas. Tempo-free.
There are threads on UNC, Kentucky, and Arizona boards with the same Hess-is-against-us accusations, so I don't think its just us.
And, we beat the spread so it isn't that he's on the take.
Its really plain and simple. The guy is a megalomaniac.
LKN has it. The man inserts himself into the game.
In the Big 10 Challenge if there wasn't an injury there wasn't a foul. Kinda NBA style.
Does anyone keep statistics of a team's record against particular head refs? All I know is we only have 2 losses this year and are 0-2 with Hess calling the game.
I once built a spreadsheet with all of our games and who officiated them and tried to find any commonalities but I was not able to determine any patterns.
so I don't think its just us
Exactly. ;) I think there is a hex on NCSU, but I think we need to be smart for "who" we pin our hex on!
Why couldn't we just suspend him for one half ala Urban Meyer.
If you ask me, I will tell you that this is exactly what this team needed. In order for this team to get better they have to create other options besides the way each game starts off to first let Smith touch the ball and then we go from there. They are going to need to come out from the start and either get some open looks for Wood or Javi to take or slash to the basket with and everybody just crashing the boards. I don't have the answers and I wish I did but, there are certain ball skills on this team that are lacking and I don't mean shooting. Crisp passing is one of them I have noticed throughout the years at State. There are games and moments that I see it being put in action but on a whole, No, NO WAY! I really can't wait till next year. I really can't stand saying that either.

I agree. Please multiply by 10 to account for tempo

Hess is this decade's version on Lenny Wirtz.
A little research will tell how bad that is.
Rightfully so Sid came out and suspended him,he had no choice or the league would have.
^Don't know if I agree with that. I think more likely is that the refs might be a little rougher on State and we would just get repremanded for it. I'd rather take a conference suspension anyday over a season-long ref-grudge.
Officials like Hess are the cops that GAWolf brings to the table from time to time.
I have no doubt that Hess would pull out his whistle during a snowball fight.
Hmm on that stat sheet website...if you go to teams. Carl Hess has officiated 91 UNC games since 1996, followed by Duke with 90, and then NCSU with 81. I don't know if that means much but it seems interesting.
