Tracy Smith has been suspended for his comments about the officiating after the game.

Will we mail it in on Wednesday?
Unreal.
When does K get suspended for MF-ing the refs on live TV? oh wait that would never happen I must be confused.
In the law, truth is an absolute defense to slander.
IMO in truth the ACC refs did suck last night. I do think they sucked both ways and the game never had much of a flow. Tracy had a tough game and he knew he wasn't getting the breaks early. Hard to fault the kid for saying what was on his mind, esp with the press baiting him along a little bit.
When are the refs ever going to be held accountable for anything? ACC refs have been the worst in the country in basketball and football for years, but have zero accountability. Carl Hess has always been terrible and it seems like he calls all of our games.
It's the conspiracy, dingdongs. When will y'all just accept it. "They" are out to get us. Seriously. No really, seriously.
So why is he suspended? For saying "The refs just weren't on our side, today."?
Carl Hess has always been terrible and it seems like he calls all of our games.
Anyway, to the question: Will we mail it in on Wednesday?
I say no. This team has fought and played hard and adversity will only make it all the more.
Tough break for Smith but I am 110% certain that ALL the players have been coached to NOT say anything about officiating, period, ever.
Better for Sid to do this than have the league office do it for him.
I expected this the moment I read his postgame comments.
The ACC has a long-standing no-criticism policy for its officials. All players and coaches know this. It's the coach's job to bitch when he sees fit, not a player's. Smith should've kept his mouth shut.
was this a SL suspension or an ACC one? I'm confused
If it's a Lowe suspension, he could have just as easily handled this internally. How about a letter of apology to the refs and a face to face apology as well.
According to the N&O: "The ACC confirmed Monday that it was N.C. State's decision to suspend Smith, not a league-imposed penalty. Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe declined to comment on Monday."
It sucks to go to Arizona without our best player, but I'm pleased that Lowe did this, because it stresses discipline, which we all know has been severely lacking the past few years. Just because Smith was right about the officials doesn't mean he was right to comment on them, knowing it was against ACC policy.
I don't think Sid got out in front of this one. I think it was a league thing.
Edit: Well damn.
IMO, they spin this as a school suspension so the coach/school get some good PR for being strong in discipline. If Lowe didn't suspend him, then IMO the ACC would have stepped in and done so.
My guess is if it were a league thing it would go something like this....
"The ACC takes these matters seriously. Due to the holidays and nature of the complaint, we will address this incident when we return from Christmas break on Dec 28th."
...at which point Smith would have been suspended for Winthrop.
Sid didn't have much of a choice here. If he did not come down hard on Tracy, and quickly, then the refs would hold a grudge against us all year.
^ the refs have a grudge against any team not named Dook or UNX
^Its not like Smith gets any respect now anyway. It will only get worse, despite the suspension.
Hess and company were selective in their officiating last night, either by intent or incompetence. This is pretty consistent with his M.O.
From the mouth of ESPN play-by-play man Sean McDonough (via RTC):
Karl Hess, he was involved in the 54-foul game the other night, and he’s one of these officials, unfortunately, who always finds a way, it seems, to be at the center of the action. You don’t come here to watch him officiate, but more often than not, he finds himself at the center of attention.
Yep, sounds about right.
It’s too bad because his comments were spot on!
Does anyone keep statistics of a team's record against particular head refs? All I know is we only have 2 losses this year and are 0-2 with Hess calling the game.
(Correction: 1-2 with Hess.... Sorry, I missed the Ga State game.)
In case you wanted to check on some Karl Hess stats & trends:
Stat Sheet
Also, he's officiated 3 of our games this season so far. I've been to two of our games (GA State and Wake), and neither game had any flow at all due to Hess's ignorance of basketball. I don't care about lopsided foul calls, but he doesn't let either team play.
Who, if anybody, can we expect to step up and give consistent effort down low in his place. Tracy is averaging around 10 rebounds per game on a weak rebounding team. Our frontcourt presence is now Dennis Horner and 3 freshman. I smell a lot of trouble for Wednesday. We are really going to need a concerted effort by our guards to pinch down inside the paint and control the boards. Our only fast break opportunities should come when Javi or Farnold get the rebound and push. Fortunately their length is not one of their strong points. Stopping Nick Wise might be the key to the game. All in all, we need a better product on the court than we saw last night. Arizona plays Lipscomb tonight at 7:00.
When do you know the officials for the UNX game?
I think this is a smart move on Lowe's part. If he was trying to cut-off the league at making a judgment, he gets a gold star on his politics. If he was just disciplining his team, then kudos for that. I think one concept Lowe has always been big on is that Valvano 'You already won the game... you just have to make the scoreboard follow suit, now' mentality where it didn't matter what the streak was, what the history was, or who the opponent was, you could win that game. We see the hustle our of the guys and a good 40 minutes. I like how they don't just fold under "great" teams when it would be easy. My point: Disciplining the players to not in game play, but also in mentality is a big part of success. Sometimes you have to really hurt a team to show them that a certain kind of mentality or attitude is not conducive to winning.
SeaWolf, I looked through his stats, and since Ted Valentine was being discussed on the Knight board, I thought I'd compare the two. In only 20 more games last season, Hess has called 1000 more fouls. I also found it interesting that both called considerable favorable games for the home teams. I understand that on the whole, home teams win games, but the spread was interesting.
I've always said that penalty/foul stats for a ref are kind of useless. The much more damaging part of game play is the timing of a call, not how many you get in a game.
2009, I agree. However, with Hess, the problem is not only the "foul to quell momentum for one team", but also his penchant to call so many fouls that it permanently alters the flow of the game. Hess just loves to hear the ringing of his whistle in his ear.
@powerpackfan
That's my number one complaint with Hess, zero flow.
09 "fold under great teams"? What are you saying?
