The New York Times is reporting that the NCAA is conducting an investigation into the University of Tennessee's football program's recruiting practices, including its use of recruiting hostesses to lure in high school prospects.
Officials have already visited four prospects and will speak to two more this week.
This is just "normal" recruiting to me, even if strictly forbidden. When I was at State, we had some group of ladies, can't remember their "official" name, but I got the distinct impression they were there to help recruit the football players. In fact, one of the ladies on the committee I was friendly with, but it didn't quite work out and I never warmed up to the idea that some 17 year old recruit was probably, ahem, being recruited by her. Of course, I could be wrong! :-)
^ The Stately Ladies.
Where's the surprise? Who doesn't have a group like that? I'm not sure what ours are called, but isn't the holes group called the "sweet carolines"?
But of course they just put out the University info about what a great place the Uni is. You really think they are HO.....ing?
Maybe I'm in the dark, but when did these groups disband if ever? All cities in the USA are trying to rid themselves of HO....stesses, good luck NCAA.
The Stately Ladies...football Hoes.
I prefer to be blissfully ignorant sometimes. I guess I thought everyone had groups like this similar to when I was working at a warehouse in Charlotte and trucking companies would send “sales reps”. The “salesman” [proverbial pimp] would send out sales reps to convince us to ship using them as a carrier more often, but I highly, highly doubt there was any kind of “dirty business” going on and doubt if there is for too many out there.
Let’s not be too ignorant; we all know that pretty girls sell to dumb hormonal teenagers, but I would be really, really shocked (to the point it really would damage my team loyalty greatly) if I found out there was any sort of under-the-table-directive to slut up to a bunch of high school athletes to recruit them. If nothing else, I would think that Tom O’Brien would eventually catch wind of this and don’t see him as the kind of guy to allow this to happen (or Herb when he was here).
The Stately Ladies were disbanded as far as I know.
FTA:
In one case, hostesses traveled nearly 200 miles to attend a high school game in South Carolina in which at least three Tennessee recruits were playing.Marcus Lattimore, a running back who made an unofficial visit to Tennessee but said he would not enroll there, said multiple Tennessee hostesses attended a game at James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C., in September. He said they brought signs, including one that read, “Come to Tennessee.”
“I haven’t seen no other schools do that,” he said. “It’s crazy.”
Sounds like schools may have hostesses, etc., then there's Kiffin going way over the top.
He's had something like 6 secondaries in the past year, and the NCAA is not likely to keep turning their head when other SEC coaches start calling him on his shenanigans.
^alpha,
Were they "disbanded" or was it just some group that graduated/left NC State and so it just kind of died? I was just curious if maybe the administration smelled anything foul in the air and got rid of it or if the parting was just "one of those things".
Umm, Class of 2009, sex sells and will always sell. It ain't called the first profession for nothin.
I doubt these days if anybody even has to ask a girl to ho-up to some recruits. There are probably plenty of ladies eager to do just that.
Be sure to read this thread over at Vol Nation too:

Honestly, I don't know. Maybe someone else here can say for sure, but I would swear they were disbanded.
But of course they just put outthe University info about what a great place the Uni is.
There, fixed that for you.
Hostess. Now that's the stuff.
BTW. This thread is worthless without pics.
Kidding.
Sort of. But gotta keep it family friendly.
hoop, with all due respect, I've known some ho-ish girls at NC State before but I don't know of any willing to do it 'for the better of NC State athletics' when they can just go party each night behind the belltower. Sex sells... I didn't deny that if you go back and read my post, but there is a difference between "sex selling" and "selling sex". If we have resigned the entire NCAA to "well, that's just how these things work" then you'll excuse me while I don't blame any of our coaches for not landing "big names" against these guys.
Plus, I have some pics of these chicks in my massive college collection of images and look... these aren't the hot sorority girls or anything...
Alpha, at least the Vols take it in stride. From VolNation, "I hope CLK puts up the pimp cane...".
I didn't mean to imply they were necessarily doing it for the betterment of NC State (or any uni for that matter). I think they just do it for themselves.. for the players, tickets to games, access to the other people, etc. And yeah, some of them ain't pretty, but a lot are, or they were when I was there in the Dick Sheridan days.
Lol, thanks alpha.
From the volnation thread.

Interesting story there. Wonder if ol herbie is gettin in on some of this recruiting action.
What UT fans seem to dread is a "wide-ranging" investigation.
As we know, lots of little things can mean big ugly things.
Wonder if ol herbie is gettin in on some of this recruiting action.
An interesting question. But if there were one school where HOstesses might make me wish I was an M&M, it would be there. MY...GOD....ASU....GIRLS, JUST WOW.
for the players, tickets to games, access to the other people, etc
More pictures. This is apparently one of the young ladies at the center of the investigation.
Also, here is a link to a Vol Nation thread that they deleted that Deadspin mentioned today that has the names and pictures of the ladies in question. (it's a capture, no pictures.)
Never forget that the Internet never forgets.
^Lacey Earps is the new Monica Lewinsky of UT.
More from uaddit.com:
According to Lacey Pearl Earps's MySpace page, she is a student at University of Tennessee and she "recruits champions." There are numerous photos and pics of her hugging what appear to be Tennessee football players and/or recruits. The pictures are small, but clearly taken on a football field.
Here are pictures of Lacey Pearl Earps with some players.
^^ Dude! Sometimes the girls are just as aggressive as the guys to get who they want. I'm assuming this isn't news to you, but girls like sex just as much as guys (if not more). Yeah, the 200 mile drive girl is an exception, but a lot of girls just want to screw a football player. I mean sometimes it's just that simple. Are we on the same page!??! Am I missing what you're saying? Not 100% what you mean by "willing to throw my hands up on someone."
I always laugh when I hear euphemisms like hostess or escort instead of just straight up calling them prostitutes.
^^Hoops, That's not what I'm saying and I don't think that's applicable SFN conversation, especially for a sports thread.
Point is that the NCAA has to take a hard line of coaching behavior somewhere. Whoring out students at your school can't really be tolerated at any level (even a rumor level) if you are an administrator working for the NCAA. These people are getting compensation from UT and the AD (apparently) already acknowledged that they do assist in recruiting. Good use of a "wide" investigation.
It's not about sex or anything like that. It's pretty well known that plenty of attractive young women are attracted to athletes...and that they can show their affection in any number of ways.
It's about an official representative of the university (the hostesses are part of an official group called "Orange Pride") having OFF-CAMPUS contact with a recruit for the purpose of trying to convince said recruit to attend their school. The NCAA rules are not so murky there. Has nothing to do with pretty, sexy or anything else.
BUT...it's good for TV and good for sites like Deadspin and Sports By Brooks, and it does drive uncertainty into UT football recruiting, which is perfect for folks that are recruiting against them.
The University of Tennessee confirms that there is an NCAA review under way. University Administration and Athletics are cooperating fully. We are concerned about the alleged activities of some members of the Orange Pride. Both university and NCAA guidelines are a part of the Orange Pride's orientation and training. If those guidelines were violated, we will take appropriate action. Because of federal student privacy regulations, we can't comment further.
Orange Pride is one of three student admissions groups that serve as ambassadors for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Orange Pride's responsibilities include staffing university-wide admissions programs, providing campus tours, and hosting prospective athletes and their families. There are 75 students, both men and women, in the group. These ambassadors interact with hundreds of students across the campus.
Lane has opened this up on UT with his big mouth. This is what happens when you talk down other coaches on a regular basis, YOUR program winds up under the microscope. I don't doubt most big programs have similar "groupies", if you will.
Well I think it's in line considering it's exactly what we're talking about.
The funny thing to me is that there doesn't seem to me to be any 'need' for this type of thing. I mean, there are plenty of girls willing to act as a HOstess, even if it's not their official title.
Hoop, so if you are arguing that there are plenty of girls out there more than willing to do this on their own accord, at their own expense, and without any kind of significant support other then "I shacked up with this guy when he was 17", are you claiming that its possible that Earps drove 200 miles away, on her own accord, brought a few friends, and was receiving no direction or support from anyone or anything else besides her hormones...
...somehow I'm not buying that.
Yea - the problem is the sign off campus I think.
I ain't saying that's how it went down. But, in general, never underestimate the power of hormones.
^ You have to look at it from the same angle as the NCAA. They aren't dumb and they know what is going on everywhere. They just turn a blind eye to that, for whatever reason that they do.
What they DO enforce is 'illegal contacts' by official univeristy reps.
Trust me on this. My sister knew Sam Jones when he was in high school. Said she could introduce me to him if I wanted. I said no -- because I am an "official" rep of the university in about five ways...WPC member, went to the school, etc. etc. etc. In no way did I want to cause NC State the least bit of problems. It's just that stringent.
