Looks like Heather Dinich interviewed Mike Archer and well, "it is what it is."
Some highlights.
HD: "Man, another tough year for the D."
MA: "It is what it is ... When we were in Tallahassee, I look out there Saturday and we have a true freshman corner, a true freshman safety, a redshirt freshman safety and a junior corner on the field with two freshman linebackers. It is what it is."
MA: "It’s like [head coach] Tom O'Brien said, we’ve lost 11 guys this year for the year. We thought we had it bad last year. It’s worse this year."
HD: "Why? Why does that happen to you guys?"
MA: ... "Everyone says it’s a curse. It’s the way it is."
Welcome Mike Archer into the NC State family! I've been using that line for damn well near 20 years. It is what it is. We're cursed. We know it. It is what it is.
This is as close as Mike has sounded to a true Wolfpacker.
Yeah, I don't know what you say if you're Mike Archer. Sucks to be him, and us.
He is certain that it's not a lack of effort.
Someone...I'm looking at you Heather....needs to ask him a direct question about Byers nauseating performance on that last FSU drive.
^
13, I have made this entry into an entry on the blog as well. A tip of the hat to you for pointing out the article.
Glad to link such a funny article. I thought I was ready for anything when I saw the link on ESPN but reading it genuinely gave me some laughs. =]
Why even give that interview. I think he should have said something along the lines of he understands why the fans and students are disappointed....we're working on it.
It is what it is." That's like the new "you go girl" or "oh no he didn't" or "get 'er done" or.....jebus....i could go on and on with equally annoying cliches. I would like to mildly change the spelling with the same pronunciation for a more fitting meaning: 'Tis twat 'tis.
"Tis twat tis"
Sounds like Dickensian porn to me, LOL.
I am at the point where I hope State has no major career ending injuries the rest of the way and that we don't lose any recruits because of the bad year.
"We’ve got a good system in place when our guys execute it."
If you have a system that your guys aren't capable of executing, then maybe you need to find a system they can execute.
This whole vibe the coaching staff is putting out that it's not our fault it's the players is really starting to rub me the wrong way. There is plenty of blame to be spread around.
this staff is inflexible
"When we were in Tallahassee, I look out there Saturday and we have a true freshman corner, a true freshman safety, a redshirt freshman safety and a junior corner on the field with two freshman linebackers"
Ok, i'm a little confused here. I know he's talking about Jarvis Byrd (frosh), Bishop (frosh), Wolff (RS Frosh), and Morgan (JR), but two freshmen LBers? Manning and who else? The starters were Manning (RS Frosh), Maddox (Soph.) and Cole (RS Soph.). Maddox was backed up by Lucas (Soph).
Does Mike Archer even know who is on his defense?
^ Mike Archer's defense is imaginary. It is not subject to trivial things like facts or reality.
"Your Defenses were pretty bad when you were at Kentucky too. What happened there?"
"Good question, Chop. We might have given up a lot of points and lost a lot of games because of it, but we forced a bunch of turnovers, so that's all the proof you need that I'm a defensive mastermind and my system works."
WVA, its what we were discussing on the other thread, why is it that our coaches always seem to want to run some off-the-wall system regardless of the sport. Why is that? Seriously.
And Archer, news flash: John Fox is going to sue you for trademark infringement if you don't start giving him credit for that "it is what it is" thingy.
At least he didn't go with the "we let them off the hook" line.
I guess next we'll hear "we picked a bad day to have a bad day" - John Fox
"This whole vibe the coaching staff is putting out that it's not our fault it's the players is really starting to rub me the wrong way. There is plenty of blame to be spread around."
I agree.
Mentioned this in the blog, but it's worth mentioning here, too:
If I knew, I wouldn’t be coaching. I’d be a doctor or a sports psychologist.Does the intelligence of this comment, alone, scare anyone of the ‘brains’ behind the defense?
…if we knew, we’d prevent it.
Exactly! If YOU knew what was going on, then YOU would prevent it. The problem is that for some reason, you don’t see (1) the lackadaisical player performance, (2) the failed/unorganized defensive structure, and (3) the poor play calling. So, Mr. Archer, what do you think the solution to the problem is; I think a lot of us have a pretty good idea EXACTLY what the problem is…
"...ask him a direct question about Byers nauseating performance on that last FSU drive. "
CJ Wilson had a similar performance on the play when Reed scored the final FSU TD. As I wrote on the game day thread just after it happened:
"Um, excuse me, but could somebody please explain to me why CJ just stood there and watched Reed fall into the endzone. "
