I saw this on ESPN and was pretty shocked by the behavior at this women's soccer game. Elizabeth Lambert, a player for the New Mexico Lobos was caught on film repeatedly kicking, punching, and even yanking another girl to the ground by her ponytail (It looked like she could have seriously injured the other player after watching how hard her neck snaps back).

The violence at this soccer game was unbelievable. If someone was caught doing this in a football game they would be suspended for many games. This girl should be given a lifetime ban from competing in any NCAA sport and New Mexico university should apologize to the other team and face sanctions for allowing such behavior.

    Dang
    That is awful
If there is any justice in the NCAA [snicker] something she will be kicked out.

If you were the coach or AD at New Mexico, would you wait for the NCAA to do something?

If I were the coach or AD, I'd have an extra scholarship available after seeing that video.. This is worse than what Legarrette Blount did after the Boise St game.

Much worse. I don't see how someone can get away with that. Refs should be reprimanded.

She should sit out the first half of the Vandy game.

Wow I just saw it on ESPN and that's turrible... Maybe I'm a bad person but it did actually make me laugh, pretty hard actually.

But in all seriousness how in the world does she get away with that for the entire game??

While she might not last much longer playing Soccer, I think she can work out a deal to do some cage fighting.

If you leave her out there in the next game, you're pretty much begging for a fight. A nice, pointy, quick elbow to the nose just as precautionary note, perhaps...

Or begging for a lawsuit if she hurts someone. It's sort of like the dog you know how has the demeanor, propensity, or breed to bite. Extraordinary care is needed to protect others or strict liability should apply.

On a side note. I dated a soccer player in college. I always found most of them to be quite hot.

She has been suspended indefinitely by New Mexico University now that the story has been on sportscenter all day. Here's part of her response to the suspension.

"This is in no way indicative of my character or the soccer player I am," Lambert said in her apology."

Some people are simply incapable of accepting responsibility for their actions. I guess she was simply possessed by demons for an entire game. What a half-assed apology.

There is no truth to the rumor she is transferring here to play safety.

I have to be honest, I saw her yank that girl down and the first thing I thought was, "OWNED!!!!!!"

Seriously, that is completely uncalled for. I mean who does she think she is, getting away with that?!?! Carolina?!?!

It's a very sad state of affairs when a women's soccer player from the University of New Mexico plays and hits harder than the NC State Wolfpack secondary.

Anyway, the chick got a yellow card. Did not get a red card, and thus, was not kicked out of the game.

    The release from UNM:

New Mexico Women’s Soccer Player Suspended Indefinitely

University of New Mexico head women’s soccer coach Kit Vela announced today that junior defender Elizabeth Lambert has been suspended indefinitely for her actions in Thursday’s match against BYU in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Championship in Provo, Utah.

Effective immediately, Lambert is prohibited from participating in all team practices, competition and conditioning activities.

“I am deeply and wholeheartedly regretful for my actions,” said Lambert. “My actions were uncalled for. I let my emotions get the best of me in a heated situation. I take full responsibility for my actions and accept any punishment felt necessary from the coaching staff and UNM administration. This is in no way indicative of my character or the soccer player that I am. I am sorry to my coaches and teammates for any and all damages I have brought upon them. I am especially sorry to BYU and the BYU women’s soccer players that were personally affected by my actions. I have the utmost respect for the BYU women’s soccer program and its players.”

“Liz is a quality student-athlete, but in this instance her actions clearly crossed the line of fair play and good sportsmanship,” said Vela.

“Liz’s conduct on the field against BYU was completely inappropriate,” said UNM Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs. “There is no way to defend her actions.”

Good thing it was just in women's soccer and not a sport that really mattered...

...sorry, I HAD to take a jab. Oh man, guys, can you imagine the amount of crying and complaining you would hear from the UNC fans if UNM beat UNC in women's soccer because of playing that rough? I wonder, by the end of the game and all things considered, what that kind of rough play really does to the final score of the game. In a sport like soccer, I'd be willing to bet the answer is 'not much'.

I played, and coached, some flag football back in my day, including a few sorority teams. The men play harder, but the women play meaner and dirtier.

can't believe shw wasn't kicked out of the game, but glad to hear she's suspended. For today's times, I guess they're really going to show her, right. What, a game or two suspension?

"This is in no way indicative of my character or the soccer player that I am. Although I've always wanted to yank someone to the ground by their ponytail, this was actually my first time doing it."

    foose,
My father was a high school basketball coach. Coached both boys and girls at various points. When I was in high school, he was the girls coach and I often filled in at practice when he needed a warm body. Now I had played basketball up through the 9th grade (when my lack of height, speed, jumping ability, and skills became apparent) but playing against those girls was completely different than against the guys. You are right, they played much meaner and dirtier. I took more elbows and shoulders to the upper body and knees and hips to the lower body than any man should. Some of the nicest All-American "girls-next-door" that you'd want to meet would generally beat the crap out of me and each other, in a really subversive way. And don't get me started on all the drama -- it was like a bad soap opera every day. I'm convinced those girls made my Dad's hair prematurely gray.

But looking back on it, I remember it as being mostly fun. Wonder what that says about me? ;)

Give me a break. The righteous indignation of you all! LOL
Dang it, I'd triple my WPC donation to have some football players who played 'dirty' like that!
Maybe this also explains NCSU's 'success' in women's sports as well.

Newt, it is pretty easy to see that she takes the first elbow by #7 and proceeds to abuse her all over the pitch. She was instigated first and just took it to her afterwards. Ever soccer team has an enforcer and I would lover to have her on my team.

    WOW!

    http://deadspin.com/5407601/elizabeth-lambert-comes-full-circle?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+deadspin%2Ffull+%28Deadspin%29&utm_content=Google+Reader

New Mexico roughhouser Elizabeth Lambert has done it all—she beat up a chick on television, became a national pariah, then a cautionary tale, and now has a soft-focus mea culpa in The New York Times. Next stop: Hollywood!

Lambert wisely chose the Times over say, Maxim or (worse) Newsweek, to give her first interview since being suspended over rough play against BYU. There were basically three messages she wanted to get across. One, rough play is a part of soccer life. Two, even though she temporarily lost her mind, she is not a she-devil. Three, you're all a bunch of sicko pervs.
