Language changes in blocking rules could affect Georgia Tech’s option
Whether it was Beamer’s pontification for change or just collective insistence that chop, crack back and other below-the-waist blocks need to be reviewed doesn’t matter. What is important is that the NCAA and ACC thought enough about such blocking situations that their rules committees have slightly altered the language of blocking rules going into the season. The hope is that the new language will give referees a better guide to follow when making such spur-of-the-moment and potentially game-changing foul calls.“The key change is that a player must be facing north-south on a crack back block,” ACC officials coordinator Doug Rhoads said at last weekend’s ACC Kickoff. “The blocker’s body must be on line perpendicular to the block.”
Sounds good, but expecting Ron Cherry to have a mental compass is asking a lot.
Then again, he can just claim that we are giving them the business and send us backwards 15 yards for laughs.
The big questions are:
1) Was this rule changed/clarified quickly because of player safety or because Beamer was the one pushing it?
2) Is this reviewable?
Overall, that was a pretty poorly written article. If anyone sees one with a better discussion, please post it.
Chop blocking (real or alleged) has been a point of contention with Navy teams under PJ as well as WF under Grobe. I remember during the Navy game that I attended back in 2002 (GREAT trip by the way,if we ever travel to Annapolis again, I'm there) CTC was screaming on the sidelines about Navy chop blocking. This also came up with some of the difficult to diagnose WF offenses triggered by Riley Skinner. It strikes me that this change is going to have to be well-defined by rule, and even then is going to be really hard to read/call.
Pack78, I remember that game. I was there as well and remember it for being so hot that I only stayed for the first two quarters. 21-0 after 4 min. in the 1st quarter.

One of the best away trips I have taken and I will always remember Philip's stats from that game:
10-15 passing with 5td's.
