UNC used to have an adopt a Football player program. These guys got all sorts of "gift"s from "friends". These guys got money, cars, and vacations. Obviously that's not okay. Just think about what kids at big football schools were getting. It is impossible to draw a line on what is acceptable for one friend to give to another, so the NCAA said no to all of it. It's just one of those things that almost all college kids experience... living on a budget. You know these guys still get perks all over town. Not to mention local celebrity status. To me, that is enough to silence the slight hypocrisy of college players not being compensated.

Above from IC. Maybe they ought to look into the "Adopt f Football Player Program" while they are in town.

On the lawsuit angle, remember that it was because of a lawsuit (and discovery/testimony for it) that the Reggie Bush stuff became public. I wouldn't want to open that up if I were UNC.

I don't think UNC would dare sue because then the agent(s) would be motivated to find and expose additional information to undermine UNC's credibility (e.g. the existence of Santa Claus).

    Excellent point.
My experience is that people use the threat of a suit to intimidate.

I am loving the Elaine Marshall angle, because it will drag a lot of stuff into the light of day, whether it is kicking and screaming or voluntarily.

UNC may have blundered here, because her office has power of subpoena. The NCAA doesn't. Her office is also one that has to eventually put things into public record, the NCAA, again, does not.

Their nightmares may soon be coming true. I guarantee you that UNC lawyers and UNC pols are going to work this one very hard in the halls of state government. It is up to the public to see that doesn't happen.

Looks like Marvin Austin may have been doing the leg work for the agents.

Why won't our local media report any of this? (no need to answer that one)

Doesn't Duke put out a lot of journalists and local government officials? I recall a couple people I graduated with (in high school) that went to Duke to study journalism of some type and because they wanted to work for state legal offices.

I bring this up because obviously with NC State's forte's not necessarily being journalism or putting out politicians to buddy up with Bev, I might be hoping for some spiteful Dookies to come to the rescue on this one. All it takes is a few non-Carolina grads / Bandwagon ex-patriots to rock the boat. We don't need an army of journalists or politicians... just a handful of loud-mouthed ones.

We came up with this theory yesterday. Still a chance this is totally legit(this from IC non-premium):

I have no idea if this is fact, but here's the potential situation (though it seems to fit with a lot of the info out there):

Potential situation- Former Hurricane & current SF 49er, Frank Gore threw the party in Miami. He's teammates with Kentwan Balmer & Vernon Davis. Vernon, and his brother Vontae, grew up in DC. Mavin's supposedly known them a long time / grew up together playing ball. One of the 3 invites Austin down for the party. Austin invites some other guys he knows. Drew Rosenhaus is Gore's agent and is at the party.

Assuming Austin only spoke informally with anyone agent related, and Austin can prove the claims that he paid his own way, then, he should have no issues... even though the NCAA will likely hate the idea of a current student athlete hanging out at an NFL party with agents potentially present. If one of the Davis bros' paid for the trip, based on the prior relationship & no relationship to the university, there should be no issues. If Balmer paid for the trip, potential suspension as Balmer would likely be considered a booster. If someone tied to Rosenhaus paid for the trip, party, hotel or anything....likely suspended with time frame depending on value of benefits & whether they were paid back.

Could be that the Elaine Marshall inquiry is the "something like that" to which TZ was referencing, rather than UNC suing the agent.

Heads up. If the Vegas party is being investigated, then check out this tweet from Burney. He mentions Chris Hawkins. Could LSU be next?

So far we have the following implicated:
    UNX: Austin, Little, possibly Burney
    Bama: Dareus
    USC: Saunders
    UGA: Green

Did I miss anyone? I have a feeling a couple more UNX players are going to get slaps on the wrist.

    Edit: Another Burney Vegas tweet.

Update, I seriously doubt that is the case because if it were then the NCAA's investigation would have stopped before it got started.
Besides, if what you posted was all there was why would the NCAA show up in xh and interview 10 or 12 players? They would have only talked to 3.

The exact opposite seems to be happening, the net gets wider every hour, now Georgia & Bama, in addition to the already mentioned unx, Florida, and SCarolina. Whose next?

And Pride, don't forget that every journalism major (or any major for that matter) from unx isn't a sports lover. In fact they have a majority female campus and no doubt many hate sports. They're more worried about their career than they are about Butch Davis’ so hopefully now that the unx is putting some 'blood in the water' they'll smell the opportunity.

in addition to the already mentioned unx, Florida, and SCarolina. Whose next?

For some reason I feel like the "Pouncey bribe" is wholly separate from Austin's parties. I say that based on the timeline as to when Pouncey supposedly took the money. Florida looks like it could be the lightest punishment when all is said and done.

Seawolf: That Vegas trip was a few weeks later. Is there any proof of Burney in Miami and/or MA in Vegas?

The second tweet I posted above mentions Austin, but I don't know if that confirms that he was in Vegas.

So my post earlier was wrong. The Chris Hawkins here is the Chris Hawkins here. See this.

To be honest, there are so many people involved I can't keep track. I know the N&O can't. FWIW, Tommy Bowden just said "it's the players fault" on TZ's show.

Ultimitely it is the players fault, however Butch and Co. can't play the ignorant card but so much. How the hell did he get all these guys to forgo guaranteed NFL money? Why are we the only ones concerned about that?

I have no doubt that as it stands this will be written off as "the problem with agents" and "a few players making bad decisions." But maybe the NCAA stumbles upon a path to the North Pole in all this...that's what I'm waiting for.

I just heard some news from a former player at UNC. He talked to multiple high level NFL front office people and they both said it is known around the league that Marvin has been taking money from agents since post junior year. They believe that he is done for this season unless he can keep up the lies for the investigation. I know it kinda contradicts my other source but I guess the football offices believe that Marvin is telling the truth and going by his version of the "truth", we'll be fine. But according to this player, who has worked in NFL front offices before, many in the NFL are aware of Marv taking money.

That's all I got for now.

Another post from IC. If he has been getting money for that long, then this could be a bad, bad situation for UNC.

You know, I actually want UNC to back up Marvin as much as possible. I want them to buy Austin's story and publically profess it's authenticity. I feel this scandal is making it public enough that Austin, at the very least, will end up getting nailed for what's been done and by UNC backing him up, it does nothing but hurt them in the public eye.

I've been thinking about this more and more, especially as I keep hearing that the schools need to pay the players. But aren't most schools athletic departments operating in the red? I just don't see how athletes can be budgeted even more so with stipends and transportation without further crushing the finances of the departments. Everyone points out all the money in college football, but didn't we do a piece this off season on just how few departments are actually operating well (maybe it was just without subsidies??)

Finally, some breaking news from WRAL. Apparently, according to their source, this whole mess is in relation to Greg Little and Marvin Austin and their improper relationship with an agent. Better get this on the blog ASAP while it's fresh.

Sure they are paid, just not in a manner that some are interested in. If you think many players on ours or their team are here because they want an education, you just are not paying attention.

But no, they should not start paying them a stipend either. If they want to have younger professional athletes, the NFL needs to start a new league to develop talent that has no use for college.

As a former college football player, I'd say I was paid handsomely enough with a free education.

baxter, if athletic departments are running in the red, then they need to right-size their business.

After all, college athletics *IS* a business, and it needs to be run with some modicum of financial responsibility.

Who is the agent in question?? Maybe look here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_E._Canter

DEC Management has grown from a company of meager beginnings into a worldwide powerhouse of professional representation under Canter's auspices. The company now has working relationships with many of the major athletes in the sports world and celebrities in the entertainment industry. The company has also co-produced two television shows, three radio shows, and has secured major multimillion dollar marketing deals with companies such as Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Ford, Acura, Mitsubishi, Kangol, Cytodyne Technologies, and several others on behalf of his clients.

    http://twitter.com/davidcanter

Just read Nick Sabans comments Considering his agent helped him get out of Miami when he realized he couldn't hack it in Miami. NOT COOL

As a former college football player, I'd say I was paid handsomely enough with a free education.

True enough Disco, but when my future NFLer road roomie and I would come back to the hotel digs from Fri nite meals and movies and there was a " mysterious " envelope on the other side of the door...I got giddy. He'd always flip me a bill ( a twenty ) to make sure we were on the same page.

This was common then and the stakes have increased. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a little " palm " from time to time from generous folks that love to watch you play.

NOTE, little palm. We were broke, couldn't work while enrolled ( summer exclusion ), and only the stars were on the receiving end. I can't recall any of us backups having a problem with it.

However, sanctioned pay for play would absolutely become more insidious to a team than this last week's flavor. How the hell could you pay scale college players?

Back to rumors. A former Gamecock football star from my era ( friends from baseball days ), E-mailed me this afternoon and said that he figured the UNX stuff had my attention, and since one of his own boys is involved, now would be a good time to say hey.

Well, he said hey, and told me that if Saunders goes down, half the Carolina D will too. Nothing more, nothing less.

    EDIT: Where'd ya play, Disco?

I've been speculating all along that Weslye "holds the key". Probably was the "snitch"!! Gamecocks don't need him anyway so his loss won't break my heart on this end. And probably won't break Spurrier's either!!

^I wondered the same about Weslye being the card that can bring the whole house down; 'stick, I think I saw that SC has moved a FB into Saunders slot and old Weslye is now 2nd team?

Yep, Demarco has been moved into the number 1 TE slot in front of Saunders. But, that happened before any of this broke. Wes has a tendency to stay in Spurrier's dog house because of his mouth.

It's actually a shame cause I think the kid could be a darned good tight end, but his work ethic hasn't impressed anyone. However, the reports are that he has been working hard all summer, but he's got to show something on the field before I'd buy into it! When he catches the ball, he's a tough one to bring down. But, his blocking has been weak!
